Ricky Gervais definitely had some jaws dropping and some heads shaking after his controversial performance as host of the Golden Globes last month. Now, there seems to be some discrepancy as to whether or not the comedian has been asked back by the Hollywood Foreign Press for a third year.
In an article for Heat magazine, in which Gervais talked about his Globes experience, The Office creator says Globes organizers asked him to "consider a third year." But Gervais said he has his doubts. "I don't think I should," he said. "I don't know what I could do better. I certainly couldn't get more press for them, that's for sure."
But the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Phillip Berk, denies asking Gervais to host again. "We have not asked him to come back," he said in a statement Monday. "Nice try, Ricky."
Gervais ruffled a lot of feathers during this year's broadcast, when he took aim at Hollywood stars from Angelina Jolie to Charlie Sheen. After the show, Berk had commented that he thought Gervais had "definitely crossed the line."
Gervais then clarified his remarks in Heat, telling The Hollywood Reporter that his discussion about hosting for a third time took place with an executive at NBC, the network that aired the awards show. "At no point did I talk to The Hollywood Foreign Press Association," he said. "I'm absolutely sure they don’t want me back."
