LAPD to honor memory of officers killed in the line of duty

A ceremony will be held today to honor the memory of Los Angeles Police Department officers killed in the line of duty.

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck was expected to preside over the 10 a.m. ceremony outside the police headquarters building.

The program will feature the traditional "roll call of fallen heroes," a 21-rifle volley, a "missing man" formation helicopter fly-over, bagpipers playing Amazing Grace, and a bugler playing Taps.

Family members of fallen officers will place roses near their loved one's name plate in the Memorial Wall, and there will be a special tribute to LAPD officers Joshua Cullins and R.J. Cottle, who were killed while on active military duty in Afghanistan.

Also, the LAPD will honor 13 officers who were killed in the line of duty from 1911 to 1933. Restored portraits of those officers, along with their stories, will be on display in the headquarters building lobby through the end of the month.
