Officials testing rail crossing gates along Metro Gold Line for 2 weeks, traffic delays expected

LOS ANGELES - Transit officials will begin testing rail crossing gates along the Metro Gold Line today, creating the possibility of traffic delays along Third Street in East Los Angeles for the next two weeks.

The testing, conducted by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority in coordination with the Department of Public Works and sheriff's motorcycle deputies, will take place through May 24 at:

-- Third Street and Civic Center Way;

-- Third Street and La Verne Avenue; and

-- Third Street and Woods Avenue and East Beverly Boulevard.

The testing is intended to simulate how rail crossing gates would work for both motorists and pedestrians. It will include the temporary installation of "No Right Turn on Red" signs and warning bells. During the tests, traffic signals at the intersections will go to an "all-red" phase as trains approach, to simulate what would happen if rail crossing gates were installed.

Metro is considering installing gates at 24 at-grade locations along the Gold Line route.

For more information, commuters can call the project hotline at 213-922-3011 or visit metro.net/eastside.
