Academy Award winner Michael Douglas had some good news for the Today show's Matt Lauer. The life-threatening tumor at the base of his tongue is completely gone, and the actor is cautiously optimistic about his new odds of beating the stage-four throat cancer he was diagnosed with this past August.
"I feel good, relieved," Douglas said in an interview that aired Tuesday. "The tumor is gone. I have to check it out on a monthly basis to maintain (this good diagnosis). There’s not a total euphoria. It’ll probably take a couple more months of getting checked out to feel that."
Watch Lauer's interview with Douglas below:
After six months of intensive chemotherapy and radiation, during which it became increasingly difficult for the actor to eat, Douglas lost 32 lbs. He insists he's doing much better now, saying he’s put 12 lbs. back on and is "eating like a pig."
Douglas says his battle with the life-threatening illness brought "a new depth" to his relationships. "All of a sudden the affection from my family, from my friends, and from my fans, hit be at a much deeper level than I would’ve ever imagined before," he said.
His two kids with Catherine Zeta-Jones, son Dylan, 10, and daughter Carys, 8, accompanied their father to many of his treatments. Douglas expressed his disdain for the paparazzi imposing on his children’s personal space, and seemingly, "enjoying watching (him) go down."
The actor -- who's nominated for a best supporting actor Golden Globe for Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps at the Jan. 16 ceremony -- said cancer put a timeline on his life, and though he feels he’s beaten it, he realizes at age 66, he’s entering the "third act" and is conscious of how to spend his time.
We wish him a continued recovery.
