We would've called it some elaborate Beastie Boys prank if news of the project hadn't arrived courtesy of the Sundance Film Festival's official lineup of short films: an Adam Yauch-directed film called "Fight for Your Right Revisited," starring Elijah Wood, Danny McBride and Seth Rogen, and carrying the simple description, "After the boys leave the party..."

Then a photo of the short popped up, with Wood as Ad-Rock, Rogen as Mike D and McBride as Yauch's MCA. All three were outfitted in perfect replicas of the Beastie's outfits from that iconic 1987 video in which the trio crashes a house party, sowing mayhem at every turn. Tantalizing stuff — and more than a little perplexing, considering the band had largely sworn off any allegiance to "Fight for Your Right."

So how did the whole thing come together? That's what we asked Rogen when we caught up with him during a "Green Hornet" publicity session.

"I literally got a phone call from MCA one day," he explained. "It was funny because we were in our office, and [writing partner] Evan [Goldberg] was sitting across from me, and I was like, 'Yeah, MCA? Yeah, yeah, OK, whatever you want! OK, sounds perfect.' And he was like, 'What just happened?' I was like, 'I think I'm going to be in a Beastie Boys video.' "

"That was it. It was amazing," he added. "I'm a huge Beastie Boys fan and they just called and asked if I wanted to be a part of it and I said yes without hesitation. I didn't need to hear anything. I didn't need to see anything, any concepts. I was just like, 'I will literally do anything you ask me to do.' "

Rogen remained mum on any plot details, but he did marvel that filmmakers were able to gather exact reproductions of the Beasties' 1987 wardrobe.

"It was hard to get," he laughed. "The real Ad-Rock was saying he still has the Stuyvesant T-shirt that he wore in the video, but they made another one for Elijah. It was amazing."

Check out everything we've got on "The Green Hornet."
