True Grit
Short Story:
After her father is suddenly murdered, 14-year-old Mattie Ross seeks to extract revenge -- but she can't do it alone. To aid her mission, she hires notorious U.S. Marshall Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn (Jeff Bridges). Together, the two embark on a wild journey through Indian Nation and form an unlikely companionship with a Texas Ranger (Matt Damon), a man who is out to settle a score of his own.
What They're Saying:
"True Grit proves to be as funny and heroic as any other legend, and tells an expert tale to boot." - New York Daily News
"The big names in the cast all do excellent work, but the biggest surprise is all but unknown Steinfeld." - Los Angeles Times
Good For Kids?
These gun-slinging westerners may entice your kids. However, True Grit's violent outtakes won't do them any bit of good.
Gulliver's Travels
Short Story:
Gulliver's Travels puts a modern twist on the classic literary tale surrounding travel writer Lemuel Gulliver. When Gulliver (Jack Black) takes on an assignment in Bermuda, he mysteriously ends up on the unknown island of Liliput, where he strangely towers over the island's tiny inhabitants.
What They're Saying:
"...the traditional problem of big-budget family entertainment arises, where the grown-up jokes are too grown-up for the younger kids in the audience and the jokes for kids are too insipid and simplistic to appeal to grown-ups." - MSN
"Marketed as a hip, modern adaptation of a classic, the movie feels more like a Christmastime TV special projected in 3D." - Slant Magazine
Good For Kids?
While the kids are out of school for the holidays, Gulliver's Travels acts as the perfect substitute teacher.
Little Fockers
Short Story:
We've met the parents; we've seen the parents meet each other. Now, in the third installment of the Fockers franchise, it's time to meet the kids. Little Fockers once more follows Greg and Pam as they navigate their awkward familial relationship and introduce a new mischievous little Focker into the mix.
What They're Saying:
"Think of it as a mildly entertaining way to get out of the house this Christmas, rather than a cracker of a movie." - Birmingham Post
"All together now: "FockersFockers-Fockers." Are you rolling on the floor in hilarity?" - New York Daily News
Good For Kids?
The little ones will laugh at Little Fockers, but will the relate?
In case you missed...
How Do You Know
Short Story:
Professional softball player Lisa Jorgenson (Reese Witherspoon) finds herself in the midst a love triangle as two completely different guys (Owen Wilson and Paul Rudd) compete for her affections.
What They're Saying:
"Before it wraps up that question like the obedient Hollywood love story it eventually has to be, How Do You Know takes an unexpectedly candid detour through how incredibly hard just following that directive has become." - Village Voice
"The sad part is that How Do You Know is nowhere near as dumb as it looks. A couple of comic set pieces are inspired -- or would be, if Brooks's timing weren't off." - New York Magazine
Good For Kids?
Although kids may find this film's comedic antics entertaining, this PG-13 comedy is too mature for the little ones.
Tron Legacy
Short Story:
At age 27, Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) is determined to find the father (Jeff Bridges) he thought had abandoned him as a child. When Sam uncovers the cyber universe his father has been living in for the past 20 years, the two reunite and embark on a dangerous adventure through the digital world of Tron.
What They're Saying:
"Given the movie's graphic pizzazz, the best hippie wisdom Bridges might offer the viewer is: Turn off your mind, relax, and float downstream." - Village Voice
"While 21st-century effects and a cutting-edge dance score make this a stunning virtual ride, the underlying concept feels as far-fetched as ever." - Variety
Good For Kids?
The kids will get lost in Tron Legacy's 3-D world of adventure.
Yogi Bear
Short Story:
In this 3D adaption of the classic cartoon series, Yogi (Dan Aykroyd) and his trusty sidekick Boo Boo (Justin Timberlake) must team up with their longtime arch-nemesis, Ranger Smith, to save their home and stop Jellystone Park from being sold.
What They're Saying:
"Rock-bottom expectations are rewarded, sort of, in this update of Hanna-Barbera's necktied ursus." - Village Voice
"Neither smarter nor dumber than the average family-friendly comedy." - Variety
