Oops! Did C. Thomas Howell Leak a 'Spider-Man' Secret?

With Andrew Garfield stepping into Toby Maguire's tights as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, filming on 'The Amazing Spider-Man' continues, amid a web of rumors about the reboot's plot surprises.

Despite last fall's news that Rhys Ifans was joining the cast as a villain character, there's been no official word from producers about who Spidey's nemesis in the upcoming movie will be.

But thanks to a recent RetroRadio podcast, MovieWeb has discovered '80s heartthrob C. Thomas Howell ('The Outsiders,' 'Soul Man'), being quite chatty with his insider information as a supporting cast member in the new Spider-Man film.

In this interview excerpt, the 44-year-old actor confirms that Spidey will battle the Lizard:

"There is not a whole lot to talk about," Howell begins, before revealing script details. "Sony wants us to be hush-hush right now. I play a relatively small role. I play a construction worker whose son is caught in the middle of a battle between the Lizard and Spider-Man on the Manhattan bridge. Spider-Man helps me get my son back from this perilous situation."

Hinting about how the film ends, Howell adds, "There is some payback there at the end of the movie. Spider-man is kind of hurting. I help him when all of the other people won't. Part of the story is, the nation thinks he might be a bad guy. They don't know what to think. Because of my experience on the bridge with my kid, I know he is a good guy. I pitch in and help out at the end."

Efforts to keep fans excited about the Spider-Man movie are undoubtedly intensifying this spring, as the Broadway production of 'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' hobbles through more delays and a

to its new opening night, now scheduled for June 15.

Meanwhile, 'The Amazing Spider-Man' will open on U.S. screens in July 2012.
